Hello. I'm glad you're here.

Who was Saint Patrick? GIVEAWAY *CLOSED*

When I was a child, I loved St. Patrick ’s Day!
My day always started with Lucky Charms and green milk…lol (My mom was always one to make any day a special day) It meant you wore green to school and dare you forget to, you’d get pinched all day! It usually meant class parties with green frosted sugar cookies and green koolaid.

As I got older, I realized that St. Patrick ’s Day was when people wore “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirts and chugging green-colored beer.

But did you know it actually has Christian roots?
First of all who was St. Patrick? Not much is known about him until he was 16 years old. He was just living life in Scotland, WHEN HE GOT KIDNAPPED BY BARBARIAN IRISH PIRATES!  They forced to work as a shepherd and farm laborer for six years. One night, Patrick had a vision in which he was shown an escape route. So he high-tailed it out of there never to look back!...WRONG!
Although Patrick was a Christian, his faith meant little to him. That changed when he was kidnapped.
It’s what sustained him through those long, dark days. Now home, Patrick became a priest and soon felt a tremendous burden for the people that had kidnapped him. So he returned to Ireland with a mission. Can you imagine?! Ireland was a pagan country! Despite adversary, Patrick persisted. Eventually the king converted and was baptized by Patrick and much of the people of Ireland followed suit. Hallelujah!
Patrick would come to be known as the “Apostle of Ireland.” As he planted churches all over Ireland.
Here’s the Prayer of St. Patrick:
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I love this ^^

This is awesome info. I didn't know this at all. I have always celebrated St Patrick's Day because I thought it was a cool holiday and a way to learn about a foreign land that many have never been to. For years, I have climbed on kitchen counters, etc. To paint green prints (left by leprechauns) for my kids to find...and where the trail ended I would put a good coin. It always made their day.

I typically dress in all the green items I have. Green shirt that says something along the lines of "this is my lucky shirt" green belt, green under garments, socks, hair tie, ribbon or something of the sort. Sometimes I will go all out and get the green food and have an entire day of green, but as I've gotten older, I don't always have the time for that.

When I was young I always wore green but now I usually forget until later in the day. I now have a grandson in Pre-K and looks forward to all holidays so I'm making him a tshirt to wear on Sunday. I have no excuse not to remember the day.

You will LOVE it in Savannah! I live in SC, and I went several years ago. My cousins used to live there. There is nothing like it anywhere else. Have a blast - and prepare to be pinched, even if you are wearing green!

I love the origin story! I will now be copying the prayer into my prayer binder. Hmmm, maybe a layout featuring this one day? Typically, we have corned beef and cabbage to honor our Irish roots - my dad always cooked it, and the family would join him for a meal. Unfortunately, he passed this Christmas, so it will be my first St. Pat's without him. It looks like it is about time I learned how to make the corned beef (and the Reubens for leftovers - the OTHER part of our tradition!).

Since my husband and I have been married we have always eaten green cabbage and corned beef. One year I did make a shepherd's pie and an Irish liquor cake, it was green inside with green icing of course. I always dress in green, even if we are planning on staying inside all day. We don't want to get pinched, you know. Saint Patrick's day is one of my favorite holidays. I look forward to it each year. Even our little girls look forward to this day.

Wearing green, green eggs and ham. Now that my children are grown, the library I work for gets to participate in the Great Green Parade in Heppner Oregon for St. Patrick's Day! And I get to wear a green tutu and everything!

We always wore the green. We always made a "green" breakfast. I still make green pancakes for my daughter. It wasnt really a "celebrated" holiday about like Valentines day. It was just a day that was green. Not until I got older did I truly understand the holiday.

I force my entire family to celebrate starting with green eggs and ham downed with a a nice kale green smoothie. For dinner green pasta or a green pizza that we make at home and my older 2 will bake cupcakes as i celebrate while drinking a small glass of wine. I have a very large family so i invite everyone . My children will remember these memories when i'm long gone and hopefully pass down the tradition to their children .

I wear so much green! Green top, green socks, green accessories, and of course, my green eyes! People always think I'm Irish because of my red hair and green eyes, and on this day, I say I am lol. I decorate my office with a bunch of St Patricks Day decorations. At home, we dye food green and if I go out with friends, we find a place that has green beer! I didn't know the background information about this day, thank you for sharing with us.

I always loved St Patrick's Day and have always dressed in green and made a special dinner of corned beef, cabbage and Irish soda bread. My kids would always tease me that I was a "wanna be Irish". It turns out that after doing a popular DNA genetic
testing that I was indeed IRISH! Happy St Patrick's Day!

We typically have corned beef and cabbage and binge watch something on television. When we lived in Vegas we'd go to the park for a picnic, but it's too cold in MI to do this :(

Thank you for taking the time to let people know the TRUE meaning of St. Patrick's Day. My family has Irish heritage but we don't really celebrate St. Patty's Day due to the pinching, green beer drinking and revelry that it has come to stand for. I homeschool my kiddos so each year we have a lesson on who St. Patrick really was and why his life meant so much to the Irish people.

I usually try to have something green to eat: treats, shamrock shake, etc. I always have green clothes for my kids and I to wear. In my younger, pre-kid days, I could’ve been found at a fun Irish pub gathering. Anything to celebrate my Irish heritage is fun. Besides the “Big 3 -Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving- St. Patrick’s Day is my favorite holiday!

I usually celebrate with green eggs and ham with green pancakes, gold glitter everywhere, set up a trap for the leprechaun, eat Lucky charms cereal, wear green from head to toe and enjoy corned beef and veggies for dinner. This year I let my kids set the trap for the leprechaun it was great fun! Thank you for the chance. ^_^

We usually have Corned Beef, cabbage and potatoes OR Cabbage, Potatoes and Sausage to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!
Our family over the years used to gather at one house and we would all have a dinner...but since all the older kids are grown and have their own lives..we haven't done that in a few years so my family just celebrates on our own!

I have always loved St. Patrick's day and I have quite a bit of Irish in me. It comes from my dad's side. I have always wanted a Kiss Me I'm Irish shirt lol just to wear at home. We like to listen to the Adventures in Odyssey episodes that tells the story about St. Patrick from the biblical end so they know the story behind the day.

On our house Leprechaun’s prank the crap out of us. It’s really rough as parents to play such tricks, essentially on ourselves, because generally we have to clean it up but so far it’s been worth the trouble. Those pesky leprechauns have staple pranks, like toilet papering our kitchen, opening every drawer and cupboard in the house, turning chairs and furniture upside down, etc. and then do random different things each year to catch our attention. One year they hung underwear from the chandelier and put everyone’s church shoes on the hood of the car, colored stuff green, drew on all the glass of the pictures on the walls (dry erase markers) etc.
It’s been a fun tradition and we’re always waiting to see what they’ll do next year!
