We've all eye-balled the We R Memory Keepers typewriter. It's so pretty with it's vintage vibe and it's hefty price of $200! I wanted it, but it was on the impractical side. So I started looking at typewriters on EBay, Etsy, Craigslist.... they're so overpriced, I might as well buy the we r memory keepers one.
But I decided to pop into a Goodwill one day and lo and behold this beauty was sitting there....
(Would have been $10 if I was over 55, lol) but that's ok. Everything looked good. It was dusty but that's about it. Even had a case for it. After verifying that I could return it if it didn't work, I snagged this baby up!
Took her home and sprayed her with canned air and tried her out. YUP.. she works! The ribbon was old so I bought a new one on Ebay for $7.
Now the big question... do I spray it? It was in great shape, but it could be a eye-catcher!
So I went to Lowe's and talked to the paint guy. I told him I wanted it either pink or vintage "teal-ish". He showed me the line of paint he thought would work best
(Valspar Color Radiance) and they had a baby pink and this beautiful color, Flat Nautical.
The pink shade was too close in color to my desk and knew it wouldn't pop.
This paint it AWESOME-SAUCE!!! It's not the spray paint of back in the day. This stuff has built in primer, no drip and no wait between coats. It was less that $4 for the can.
I HIGHLY recommend it!
I thought that covering the intricate parts was going to be hard but it was actually very easy! Since the top came off (to change the ribbon) All I had to really do was cover the whole middle-section and one little piece on the front-right that indicates whether you're typing in red or black. So I covered that with tape and wrapped the whole innards of the type writer in 2 grocery bags. Carefully tucking the corners in with a butter knife.
I took the typewriter and the cover outside and painted her. Took 2 coats and 1 more for good measure. The paint was so full-coverage, it even covered the writing on the cover!
It took me less than an hour to complete the project!!
I'm so in love with it!!
Now I'm walking around my house looking for more stuff to spray paint :)
