The day I bought my typewriter at the Goodwill I also found this gem. Here's the super easy process I used to give it a new life!
First thing is to remove the hardware and sand it
Then I painted it with acrylic paint and a foam brush from Michaels.
It took about 1 1/2 bottles.
I applied 3 coats.
While everything was drying, I sprayed goo gone on the handles to get rid of the gunk, I let it soak in for about 20 minutes, but when I went to wash it off it didn't do anything. But it worked out, because when I decided to sand the gunk off, the metal started poking through and it was beautiful. (See final pic)
After drawers and box was dry I sanded all the edges and a bit throughout for a distressed look.
Screwed the hardware back on and viola!!
